What is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a revolutionary social welfare scheme launched by the Government of India in 2015 which aims at providing affordable housing loans to millions of people in India. A large number of families can avail of the opportunity to purchase the house at a lower cost. The primary objective of this scheme is to facilitate the construction of more than 20 million houses in urban and rural India before March 31, 2022.

The PMAY comes with a host of benefits some of which are mentioned below

Home Loan Subsidy

The beneficiaries of this scheme can avail the benefit of interest subsidy on home loans. The subsidy rate will depend on the income group of the applicant.

Pucca houses in slums

Under PMAY, the Government is dedicated to providing pucca shelter to slum dwellers all over the country.

Benefits for women

The scheme is also designed to uplift the status of women in society. In certain cases, homeownership has to in the name of a woman in the family in order to get the benefits of this scheme.

Any citizen of India belonging to Economically Weaker Section (EWS), the Lower Income Group (LIG) or the Middle Income Group (MIG) can apply for this scheme.
  • A beneficiary can be:
  • A family having a husband, wife and unmarried children.
  • Unmarried individual earning member of the family (only for MIG scheme).
  • Someone who doesn’t have a pucca house in his/her name or in the name of any other member of the family.
Female ownership is mandatory for EWS and LIG. However, there is no requirement of female ownership in case of extension or MIG categories.
In the event of absence of an adult female member in a family, you can get the property registered in the name of a male member.
There are two ways to apply – online and offline. On applying online, there will be no charges. On applying offline, you will have to pay a registration fee of Rs. 25 plus GST.
